In 2011 the world’s tallest tower, 610
meters high, will makes it debut in the Oshiage-Narihirabashi district of
Sumida, Tokyo. The erection of this new tower will coincide with the final
switchover to terrestrial digital TV broadcasting, scheduled for 2011.
Based on the five-storied pagoda, representative of
the architecture of ancient Japan, the structure of the new tower incorporates
anti-earthquake damping features. The design also combines visual
characteristics of the Japanese tradition: sori and mukuri (inward and outward
curves). Fusing modern engineering principles with traditional aesthetics, this
new tower boasts proportions that are as simple as they are original,
reflecting a dignified elegance.
